How Astrocartography Analysis turns birth data into place questions
This page is a research-informed educational guide, not original scientific research or a peer-reviewed study. It separates astronomy and software behavior from the traditional symbolic language of astrocartography, then puts practical evidence back in the decision.
The short version
We normalize a recorded birth moment, calculate planetary positions, derive angle relationships, project them onto a globe, and give you prompts for comparing places. Those calculation steps can be repeated for the same inputs. The meaning is a traditional interpretive framework; it is not a promise about what a city will do.[1]
What the platform calculates
A useful map begins with a clearly stated question and a birth record you can stand behind.
The calculation layer is a chain of ordinary, inspectable transformations. A local date and wall-clock time are paired with an IANA time-zone identifier and normalized to UTC before the server receives a calculation request. This distinction matters because a time-zone label is a ruleset, not a timeless numeric offset: historical clock changes and daylight-saving transitions can change the UTC instant represented by the same clock reading.[1][13]
The position service loads the DE440 ephemeris through Skyfield, asks for apparent positions, and returns a defined set of planetary coordinates. The repository retains endpoint tests for the shape and contents of that response. A successful calculation therefore means that the software accepted the inputs and produced values through this pipeline; it does not mean that an interpretation has been proved or that a place has a causal effect on a person.[2][3][4]
Birth moment
The date, local time, place, and time-zone rule establish the starting context. When the time is uncertain, angle-led observations should remain provisional.
Coordinates
A birthplace and a place under consideration are represented with latitude and longitude so the calculation has a defined location rather than a vague city name.
A real question
Relocation, travel, work, belonging, or timing questions give a map a decision context. Asking a map to choose a life removes the human judgment it cannot supply.
Birth information and time accuracy
Local clocks and time zones need a common frame before calculation inputs can be compared.
A birth record may report a clock time, a rounded time, a time written by a relative, or a time copied into a later certificate. Those are different kinds of evidence. The application can normalize an entered time, but it cannot recover a missing minute or decide whether a historical clock was set correctly. IANA explains that its database records civil-time history and predicted future rules while also documenting important limits for older timestamps.[13]
The practical consequence is not that a map is useless when the time is uncertain. It is that confidence should be attached to the question. Planetary sign positions may move slowly enough to remain stable across a short window, while an angle can shift materially with minutes and latitude. Compare a range of plausible times, label what changes, and do not turn the most dramatic-looking version into a fact.
The service’s normalization utility is intentionally separate from interpretation. It uses the selected IANA zone to derive a UTC instant, rather than silently treating a location name as a fixed offset. This keeps an input assumption visible and gives a later reviewer something to reproduce. The same discipline applies when entering a destination: use a specific place and the local date-time convention that the question actually involves.[1]
Planetary positions
A map starts with a set of positions for the chosen birth moment, not with a verdict about a place.
An ephemeris is a time-indexed model of celestial positions. In this project, the astronomy service uses Skyfield with a DE440 data file, requests apparent right ascension and declination, and derives a tropical longitude for the supported planets. “Apparent” describes the coordinate treatment requested by the engine; it is not a claim that the output is an exact measurement of a person’s future. JPL’s documentation describes DE440 as a numerically integrated ephemeris fitted to observations, which is useful provenance for the calculation layer.[5][4]
Reference frames and conventions are part of the technical story. IERS publishes conventions for reference systems and Earth-orientation models, and its ICRF material describes a celestial frame used to express positions consistently. The product does not ask readers to reproduce every astronomical convention by hand; it does make the boundary clear: a calculated coordinate is an input to a map, while a symbolic meaning belongs to a different layer.[7][8]
Repeatability is valuable for debugging and comparison. If the same inputs, engine version, data file, and conventions are used, the calculation should be inspectable and testable. Repeatability is not predictive validity, however. A stable numerical pipeline can support a traditional reading without turning that reading into an experimentally established cause of events.[3]
Planetary lines
Lines show where a planet is traditionally read through a particular angle around the globe.
A planetary line is a geographic projection of an angular relationship. The projection service uses the calculated right ascension and declination, combines them with Earth rotation and a target longitude, and samples a line for map display. MC and IC lines are meridian-style paths; ASC and DSC paths are horizon crossings that curve with latitude. The map is therefore a visual representation of a calculation rule, not a magnetic border around a city.[9][10]
Line distance is a prompt for context, not a universal threshold. A place close to a line may be useful to investigate, while a place farther away can still matter through a relocation chart, other planets, local circumstances, or a different interpretive tradition. The software’s sample spacing is a map-resolution choice; it should not be presented as a claim that life changes at a precise geographic boundary.
AC, MC, DC and IC angles
The planet is only half of a traditional line reading; the angle supplies the life area being emphasized.
The Ascendant (AC) is the eastern horizon relationship, the Midheaven (MC) is the meridian or public-direction relationship, the Descendant (DC) is the western horizon relationship, and the Imum Coeli (IC) is the lower meridian relationship. These names describe geometric roles first. Traditional astrologers then attach themes such as presentation, visibility, partnership, and roots. Different schools prioritize angles, aspects, house systems, and line distance differently, so a single keyword should never stand in for a whole reading.[15][14]

Birth-time uncertainty is especially relevant here because angles move with the local sidereal relationship to the horizon and meridian. Treating an AC or MC line as fixed when the record is approximate creates false confidence. A responsible reading compares several plausible inputs and names which themes remain stable rather than selecting the most flattering map.[9]
Line distance and location context
A place evaluation is a comparison exercise that brings map themes into a lived context.
A place is not just a pin. It has a neighborhood, a commute, a language environment, a support network, an accessibility profile, a cost structure, and a legal context. The map can help someone name a question about those conditions, but it cannot observe them. If a move is under discussion, write the practical criteria before reading the symbolic themes so that a beautiful interpretation does not erase a non-negotiable constraint.
For travel, current safety and health information belong in the research set. The U.S. Department of State publishes travel advisories, and CDC Travel Health Notices describe destination health risks and protective actions. Those pages are authoritative practical sources for their own scope; they are not evidence for a planetary meaning. Keep the source hierarchy visible instead of using one source to launder a different claim.[21][23]
For housing, compare an actual budget with local rents, taxes, transport, and access to care. The Census Bureau’s housing-affordability material is a starting point for understanding measures and their limits; it cannot substitute for local listings or professional advice. A line can be one column in a comparison table, never the entire table.[24]
Relocation charts
A relocation chart recasts the angles for a chosen place while keeping the birth moment as the reference point.
In a relocation chart, the moment of birth stays constant while the place changes the horizon, meridian, and house relationships. The project’s house service calls Swiss Ephemeris with the Placidus option for this focused calculation path. That implementation detail helps a reader know which layer is being discussed; it does not make Placidus the only legitimate astrological choice. Other practitioners may use another house system or emphasize the global lines instead.[12][11]
A comparison becomes more useful when each place is evaluated against the same questions. List desired work conditions, relationships, climate tolerance, care needs, budget, immigration path, and a trial-visit plan. Then note which map themes are stable across time uncertainty and which are sensitive to the assumptions. The output is a structured prompt for inquiry, not a ranking that can identify an objectively best city for everyone.
Timing and Best Dates
Timing tools answer a different kind of question and still need a grounded reading of the result.
A timing request introduces a date range, a chosen event, and often a place. It is different from asking where a line falls. A timing report can organize a window for reflection, but it cannot guarantee that an interview, move, relationship, or launch will succeed. Treat dates as planning hypotheses and leave room for ordinary causes, other people’s choices, and changing conditions.
Decision research under deep uncertainty emphasizes robust and adaptable plans rather than a single brittle forecast. That principle is a useful bridge between a symbolic timing practice and practical reasoning: define a minimum viable next step, identify what would change the plan, and keep a fallback. A map should widen the set of questions you ask before it narrows the choices you make.[20]
Calculation versus interpretation
Keeping these layers distinct is the most useful form of transparency.
Calculation
Inputs are normalized and transformed into positions, angles, projections, and place context by software. Tests can check that the pipeline responds as designed.
Traditional reading
Astrologers associate planets and angles with themes such as visibility, belonging, effort, or relationship. Jim Lewis is a practitioner source for relocation terminology, not a scientific authority.
Your meaning
Your history, values, resources, and current question decide what deserves attention and what does not. A reader may reject a traditional association or hold it lightly.
The history of Western astrology shows that its concepts and uses have changed across cultures and periods. A historical account helps explain why contemporary practitioners do not all mean the same thing by a line or a planet. It should not be collapsed into a claim that an old practice has been scientifically validated merely because the vocabulary has survived.[14][15]
Accuracy, uncertainty, and limitations
Responsible education includes saying where the map stops.
“Accuracy” has more than one meaning. A calculation can be internally consistent with its inputs, coordinate conventions, data file, and software version. That is different from asking whether an astrological interpretation predicts an external outcome. Carlson’s double-blind Nature study and Mayo, White, and Eysenck’s personality study each tested specific hypotheses under specific designs; neither should be stretched into a universal statement about every practice or every person.[16][17]
A person can also experience a meaningful reading through ordinary cognitive processes. Heuristics can make a vivid description feel representative, and confirmation bias can favor evidence that fits an existing story. Naming those possibilities is not an insult to someone’s experience; it is a way to keep one compelling anecdote from becoming a guarantee for the next decision.[18][19]

This methodology and the linked education guides are research-informed educational guides. They are not original scientific research, they have not undergone an external peer-review process, and their citations do not scientifically validate astrological meanings. Repository files and retained tests document product behavior; official technical sources document astronomy and time conventions; academic sources document selected historical, psychological, or evaluation claims; practitioner sources document traditional interpretations.
The evidence status of a map can therefore be precise without being inflated: the software may repeat a calculation for the same inputs, while the symbolic reading remains a tradition-based lens. No planet or line is established here as a cause of a life outcome. Practical evidence, consent, resources, and qualified advice remain necessary for a consequential choice.[16][19]
Sources and evidence
The source hierarchy keeps factual claims traceable and prevents citation laundering.
Tier A sources in this page are the accepted repository commit, JPL, Skyfield, IERS, IANA, and Swiss Ephemeris documentation. They support claims about the actual implementation, coordinate vocabulary, ephemeris provenance, reference systems, civil time, and house calculation. Tier B sources are peer-reviewed studies and academic history. They support only the particular hypotheses, cognitive mechanisms, uncertainty practices, and historical scope they actually address.[7][6]
Tier C sources are primary historical or practitioner works. They support statements about what traditional astrocartographers commonly teach, not a claim that those meanings predict outcomes. Tier D sources are official practical references for travel, visas, health, and housing. Their recommendations must be checked for the relevant jurisdiction and date.
